    Kingfisher RIP

Went to Blashford for dawn this morning to shoot the kingfishers once more and as usual not long after arriving spotting a KF some 30 to 40 metres away hovering over the water. After a few seconds he or she started to fly towards one of the perches in front of the hide when out of nowhere a bird of prey swooped down and that was the end of him. The light wasnt good enough to make out what is was but the likelyhood would be a sparrowhawk which does frequent the area. We looked and there was another KF presume the partner who soon disappeared not to return

Must have had very mixed emotions over that event Stan. Sad that the Kingfisher is no more, amazed to have seen the event, annoyed there wasn't enough light to capture it.

we were gutted on so many levels, sad for the KF which could possibly affect nesting etc in future years, missing the shot as the BOP came out of nowhere and has probably put paid to regular sightings this season

Unsure what the BOP was, buzzards are regular, Dee got shots of a honey buzzard last week, there is a perigrine, which later flew at a distance past the hide carrying a magpie and there is a regular sparrowhawk as well. Most likely would be the latter, probably sitting in the trees on the left watching and could not resist the sight if the KF hovering

When I was leaving the hide last Tuesday a Sparrowhawk flew off from the gate down the short path to your right as you walk back to the car

the warden has put the info on the Blashford Blog along with a few of Dees kingfisher shots and he says that a peregrine and a hobby are regularly seen over the lake but most probably the sparrowhawk who was quite active among the sand martins last year
