Canon 70-300mm L lens vs Sigma 100-400mm bazooka lens

I am in two minds about getting the Sigma lens as I am quite attached to the Canon L brand. The only reason I am considering the Sigma is for the extra reach of 100mm against my present 70-300mm lens. I usually use a Kenko 1.4Tc with my Canon lens which in effect gives me 672mm reach with my crop 760D camera. I am wondering whether I could get away with my Canon by buying a 2X convertor (Kenko) which I am told will auto focus in good light. This will give me a reach of 960mm.

The other advantage of the Canon L lens is that it holds it's value much better than other third party lenses. It also produces very sharp images as members can see from my bird photos- despite using a 1.4 TC.

I will appreciate members comments on this so that I can make up my mind.

    Many thanks

    Nathaniel

If you can afford , have you considered trading in your 300 for the Canon 1-400 mkll ? Your 300 becomes pretty much redundant with either 400mm lens . I think once you have used L glass , you will miss not using it . It`s not just the optics , it`s the build quality ect . Camera bodies come and go , decent lenses not so much .

I've never used a 2x from any manufacturer but I have done a fair bit of research into various TCs before making my recent purchases!
I don't think a 2x will do you any favours as you'll lose two stops and need really good light to get any auto-focus and I suspect the IQ will drop markedly too.

I think you've previously discounted the 100-400L in the past due to its weight, although this could be a timely reminder that my mk 1 is still available and I'll do it for a very good price!

Hi Nat think you can see concensus is 2x isn't really a good option. You need to consider the loss of 2 stops and the effective focal length will need you to use fairly high shutter speeds, 1/1000 if you don't want to rely too much on IS. Will mean use of high ISO and together with IQ that won't be what you are use to you could be disappointed with the results.

Plus a 2x converter would mean an effective F11 maximum aperture, I very much doubt that would really give reliable a/f however bright the light.
In addition, it's difficult to keep anything in the frame at 960 mm equivalent, that's what I have with the 150 - 600 mm Sigma C on the 80D. I know some people can keep a target in the frame and steady at that, but I think they must all be bigger and stronger than me.

It appears that the viable option for me is the Sigma on account of it's weight and positive reviews on the internet. Anyway I will keep on pondering as I am in no immediate hurry to replace my Canon.

Nat, don't get the Sigma and hope to use it with the Kenko 1.4 and the 760D. It probably won't work. Mine won't work with the 80D and the 760D is pretty similar, both have the Digic 6 processor. All I get is an error message, it's the same with the 150 - 600 C.

think we have been down this path before with t.c's the newer camera models seem to have a block built into them regarding third party manufactures t.c's .
you can definitely rule out the 2x tc as well apart from lack of a.f the viewfinder will be to dark to see the subject .you have a few choices there nat ,stick with what you have which is sensible ,at the 400mm focal length theres either the canon 100-400 mk 1 or mk2 i believe the mk2 is quite a bit lighter to ,or the sigma which again is light ,but there are already two for sale used on wex website ??? ,or the good old canon 400mm f5.6 L..
i know your need for lightweight but i really do think with what your trying to achieve you would be better off with the sigma 150-600 c or the tamron version ,both of which i think you can take the tripod foot off of for less weight .but be aware you will struggle for light with either of those

Nat, perhaps you should also consider the 400mm f/5.6. MPB have one in "like new" condition for £734 and should work with the Kenko.
It's a little heavier than the Sigma (but only by 90g!) and if you find that you're always at full reach with the 70-300 anyway it may be a good choice.

The only reason I didn't get one (or haven't got one yet, anyway!) is that I really wanted the versatility that the 100-400 gives me, as I'm also using it for insects (the close minimum focus distance helps there) and aircraft at airshows, as well as birds & wildlife.

I'm not really bothered about using a t/c with the Sigma zooms, I have enough difficulty locating the target at 600 mm as it is. The Kenko works very well for my main purpose, with the Sigma 105 mm macro it makes a 168 mm (equivalent to 235 mm on the 80D) at a fraction of the cost of a 180 mm macro.

Thanks good folk for all your sound advice which is much appreciated. I am now veering towards the Sigma Bazooka. Yes, Chris I do shoot most of my wildlife pics at the long end but there are also occasions that I have to shoot at closer range. So a zoom is convenient for me. I did own the Canon 400 5.6 lens some years ago but sold it when I found the weight was becoming a problem. My present 70-300mm lens plus 1.4TC is brilliant as long as I shoot within it's range but when I shoot further away from it's range , the subject becomes soft. I note that the Sigma Bazooka lens is now selling around £599 on Ebay!!!!!!!!
