    Opinions on 80D appreciated ...

My daughter (23) is looking to buy her first serious camera. She has been thinking 750/760 at around £500-£600 but I would rather she spent a little more and perhaps looked at the 80D because I don’t want her making price the most important factor in her decision. Target budget in my mind is about £800 with absolute ceiling of £1000.

So, would very much appreciate opinions from other members regarding the 80D or any other alternative. Her interests will be landscape / street / people. She is very unlikely to want to print larger than A4 with the vast majority of her work simply being shared online. I will probably give her my 24-105 to get started.

    Thanks in advance ...

I don't have one but it would definitely be the model I'd choose if I hadn't gone full frame....spec and price balance it looks to be the best!

I have many friends with an 80D and they are well impressed. On that basis, your instincts are sound.

I have the 80D and it's an excellent all round camera.

I'd also look at the 77D, all of the main parts, sensor, a/f system etc are identical to the 80D. It lacks some of the customisation e.g a/f microadjustment but gains in other ways e.g. Bluetooth connectivity. Unlike the 80D it is plastic rather than metal, but I find that today's plastic is very strong and I feel that the plastic bodies are very robust, plus there is a great weight saving, 77D is 540 grams rather than 730 for the 80D. Both are available with significant cash back at present, typical price £714 for 77D and £858 for 80D.

One reason to save on the body is that you might need to look at an additional lens. While the 24 - 105 is a very good range for full frame, the widest end is equivalent to 38 mm on these APS-C bodies and for landscape and street she would probably need something wider than that in addition. Don't look down on the IS STM lenses, they are great value for money and much better than many believe.

Of course you could go to DigitalRev and get a 6D (Mark 1) for £915 which would match the lens perfectly.

Well as you are giving her a lens and with the cash back offer on at the moment it comes in near the lower end of your budget, £858.00 inc. £85 cashback, unless you want to give Currys another £400

          Park at £863

One thing possibly to consider is her hand size. Go try one for size with her, then buy cheaper elsewhere.

or I you do not mind a grey from a decent company that will give you a longer warranty that is usable at Canon then Panamoz have it for £771

If you have another body that weighs about the same as the 80D I'd let her try it out for weight with the 24 - 105 lens, she may decide it's heavier than she would like to carry around. No good just picking it up, try going around with it for a few hours.

I own the 80D and 24-105mm lens and find it quite heavy, plus it is not wide angle on the crop sensor.
I recently bought the 77D and used it on holiday with the 18-135mm lens. It was perfect. Not too heavy, plus it would fit in my handbag. I took a range of images from wide angle to zoomed in. You can view some of the Dubrovnik images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jan_ha...57682552404694

Re: Opinions on 80D appreciated ...

I am still a relative newbie, but having just upgraded from a 750D to the 80D, I can say that the 80D is streets ahead of the 750 in terms of low light performance and speed of auto-focus. I bought the 750D when starting out as I didn't really know what I wanted but knew I didn't want to spend too much initially. It is a supremely capable camera and will suit many but it didn't take me long to know I wanted to upgrade. If a straight choice between the two, the 80D wins hands down, even in the "value for money" stakes, imo. However, I wonder whether her interest in landscape and street that a FF would suit her better, if budget allows.

Having said all that, if you do decide on a 750D, I will have mine up for sale

I would recommend one of the fast primes to get started with....because it will present the opportunity to understand DoF and aperture much better....whereas this is a little limited with an F4 lens.

I had the 80d for a year and found it a very capable camera in most situations ,it's the best 1.6 crop in the canon range at this moment in time imho .i only sold to move back to 1D series bodies

Maybe should be considering a 6D...good price if you can find one and full frame takes the pain of crop sensor focal length conversions away.....also quite light for a full frame.
