Bearing in mind the above comments, I would suggest your exposure was unduly influenced by the sky and with birds against a clear sky, I would tend to over expose by 2/3rds to a full stop to get more accurate exposure for the bird.
I have taken the liberty of tweeking the shot a little to approximate what you saw, rather than what the camera thought it saw .......... hope you don't mind.
