How to hide a Steam Locomotive

The locomotive "Repton" was at rest in a siding at Grosmont whilst I was waiting to capture a departure to Pickering. what I hadn't expected was that they would be changing the loco for that departure.

#1 Repton putting up a steam screen in the siding

#2 Pee-po Repton I can see you but only just.

#3 in the midst of the smoke and steam during the change over.

#4 Repton departing Grosmont for Pickering having taken over the train from the loco that brought the train up from Whitby. The two discs were added prior to departure but I haven't a clue as to what they signify if anything.

Cheers Ian, that last one was the shot I wanted the first three were just a bit of background story telling. I had to leave the Bride to look after my drink at the pub whilst I went to capture these [emoji6]

Nice set Peter, like the last image. Definitely looking through the right glass with that shot.

A very good set and all that steam adds nicely to the atmosphere

For those who don't know they change engines at Grosmont as the line from there to Whitby is owned by Network Rail so not part of the NYMR meaning engines using it have to be main line certified and few are due to the need for expensive warning, protection and signalling systems, etc. From Grosmont to Pickering NYMR can use any engine currently 'in ticket'.

Congratulations Peter ! (on new wife and photos !) . We stopped in the Station Tavern last weekend , it's handy for dashing out for photos and does a good pint of Ale .

I use "The Bride" as a term of endearment John, we celebrated our 46th anniversary in June

Indeed they do mean something: http://www.semgonline.com/headcodes/sheadcodes.html

The Southern Railway, for whom Repton was built, used white discs as route indicators (probably lamps at night) presumably for the benefit of station staff and possibly signalmen. It's likely the practice carried over to BR days as well. Southern also used numerical route codes with it's electric and DMU services and these also carried over into BR - I can even remember that the route headcodes that called at my local station were 62, 63 and 18 but not 60 which was the express service between Brighton to Portsmouth...

Other railway companies/BR regions also used lamp codes to signify the type of train - express, local, freight etc - rather than the route. Current practice does not appear to require either.

I'll put my anorak on and leave now...

A nice series of pictures too.

Thanks for taking time to look and comment and for putting your anorak on Nigel, that’s my bit of learning for today.
