      my thoughts too, strange that there is much less detail in a full

        A nice pair of images. Its not always easy to expose correctly for the moon but you have done a great job.

          Same reason as why low sun angles as always best for detail down here. When we see the full Moon we are seeing it at it's equivalent of midday so no real shadow length whereas when we see it side on we are looking at the equivalent of late afternoon or early morning.

          If you look at the two images presented you can see that the most detail is close to the poles and the terminator line where the sun, seen from the surface, is low in the sky and close to the horizon. As you look further away from the poles/terminator the detail decreases rapidly as sun appears higher in the lunar sky and throws increasingly shorter shadows reducing the contrast between light and shade and softening the details.
