CompositionallyI like the image. As a Silhouette, it's not working as I feel I'm being led into a dark hole and that Darkness over powers the image IMO

In two minds about this... Like Tom I reckon the composition is spot on and to be honest I do like the castle as a silhouette but, as Tom says, it is a bit of a big black hole right in the middle of the picture. I think it might be worth seeing if you can recover a little detail in the shadows. Probably just enough detail to hint at the shadowed structure without compromising the silhouette itself - if you see what I mean...

...unfortunately I didn't bracket....but recovered some detail.....thanks for this....note to self - must try harder!
Is this any better...or do you think the building should be properly exposed?

I think with the windows showing it pulls you into the photo better and makes for a really spooky good image. Much better

Definitely better. I might not have brought it up quite that far but that's a matter of personal preference.

If the castle was correctly exposed you'd lose the atmosphere and of course it would simply look unnatural - we know almost instinctively that anything with the light behind is going to be in shadow and on the dark side, if it isn't it looks wrong which is often a problem with HDR imagery.

                      Re: Powis Castle mono

A big improvement with the castle more exposed. I really liked the sky and the lead-in path on the first shot but 40% of the shot being black put me off .....now you have something really quite striking.

I liked the original and don’t always agree with the “lift the blacks” callers but having seen the edit, have to say I think it’s much better.
