    50mm replacement

It's finally happened - my 50mm f1.8 II (the plastic one) has fallen apart. Not too bad for a second hand item bought in 1997!

I like to have a fast 50mm in the bag (forget the L model!) so do I go for the direct replacement 50mm f1.8 STM or maybe a second hand f1.4?

Any comments on either of these lenses would be appreciated.

    Re: 50mm replacement

The STM is the more reliable lens and as far as image quality is concerned there doesn't seem to much difference between them.
Some people don't like the STM focusing system when using the lens for manual focus.

The 1.4 is prone to inconsistent focusing and suffers with a mechanical weakness in the focus system, obviously buying a used 1.4 then you could have a greater chance of getting one with a problem.

I bought the 1.8 STM and have found it much better than my old 1.8 II optically, and far better focussing and more solid construction. It's a bargain, a different beast altogether.

        Thanks Ray & Richard.

I wasn’t aware of the potential problem with the 50mm f1.4 and your other comments are in line with my own thinking on the f1.8 STM.

For the price it looks like the best bet.

Maybe you treat it more gently than me.
I see you have the 40mm pancake. How does it compare with the 50mm?

I still have my F1.8 II, but I've found the STM model quite a lot sharper, particularly towards the image edges. The other main difference is the autofocus, much faster and quieter.
Apparently the plastic used for the old model wasn't the best quality and it can deteriorate over time, which can lead to the lens elements not being held firmly with gradual loss of sharpness. It was only when I compared the image quality of the STM that I realised the old one wasn't as good as I had thought it was.

Another vote from me towards the 50/1.8 STM
Solid little lens, nice and light, focus is quick and quiet, a huge difference compared to the 50/1.8 Mk II. Optical quality is great as well.

                  Thanks everyone for your comments.
                  Although I have a 35mm f 2 IS I still feel the need for a 50mm so I've decided to go with the 50mm f 1.8 STM.
