    My grandfather (many, many years ago) would always touch his cap and say "Good morning, sir" when he saw a magpie, I've no idea where the tradition came from but apparently it was quite normal for his (WW1) generation. In those days, magpies were pretty rare so he didn't have to do it very often as they were heavily controlled by gamekeepers. How things have changed.

    This came about during WW1 when on seeing a single Magpie it would saluted. It was thought that Magpies mate for life (whether they do I don't know) If a single bird was seen it was thought that it had lost its mate - hence the salute out of respect.
