Re: Who bothers to have their own website ?

We have had our own website for some years but it is a bit time consuming when you consider how quick it is to upload to Flickr so it rarely gets updated

So now we just have a link on the homepage to the Flickr photostream

Re: Who bothers to have their own website ?

I have a website (www.raphoto.me) which is designed to be a brochure more than a selling tool. I did have the sales facility switched on - its with Zenfolio - but I found it a bit too top heavy and I suspect daunting. Having looked a lot of "professionals" (which obviously I am not...) they mainly say "contact me" if you want to buy a print. So I am copying that. It is a better mechanism for saying who you are as a professional (or aspiring professional) rather than Flickr. That said, I also post to Flickr and my Facebook page and also a range of Facebook groups where I think there will be interest in what I am doing. I also have a newsletter which is rather less regular than it should be. I must say I am not good at driving people to either the website or the newsletter to sign up. Anyway, Zenfolio is not difficult to set up, but I am thinking of moving to a Wordpress site before too long.

Of course I expect everyone here to want to sign up to my newsletter: http://www.raphoto.me/newsletter

I have Zenfolio.....i started it as a resource for families wanting wedding photos....I just made business cards available to guests to point them to the website. I did a few weddings and it was used a lot - not that I made any money from it. Its costing me and I cant really justify it.....its a nice to have for me.

Yep - had a smug account for quite a few years, mainly for the racing - I am fortunate that it pays for itself, upload full size files but only display smaller / watermarked versions, unlimited so use it for storage / back up with a lot of galleries 'hidden'. Paid up for another 5 years at least, very basic layout - lot of the drivers etc are very old school and so needs to be easy to use lol.

In my opinion, having a web presence, be it one's own website or an account on Flickr or elsewhere is worth the effort if you want to exhibit your photographic efforts to a wider audience.

              My own is at http://www.john-evans.org

I use program called Koken which can be found at http://www.koken.me
