This one. I had to go and find the other one to have a look, but like Jonathan, I found the rainbow colours slightly too distracting from the simplicity of the shot. This one works a lot better for me.

Also prefer this one and would prefer it even more if it was just a single photo rather than a triptych.

I much prefer this one Stan.

To me, Over Gilding the Lily applied to the first shot, whereas the simplicity of this one has much greater appeal.

This is the one I'd put my money on.

However, as I mentioned earlier, it's all about the technique that best supports your artistic intent. If you are able to share that (artistic intent) with us, we will then be able to make an informed decision about which image achieves that stated goal

After that a valid critique then needs to address the reasons why that technique succeeds or fails in your stated goals.

This version I find a bit dull and flat. If not using the spectrum effect then I think some kind of gradient is needed in the background. I also feel proper monochrome is a better ideal too.

I had a quick play with a curves layer set to overlay with a gradient mask applied...

my thoughts too Nigel, in fact i showed both versions to one of the judge members of the camera club and his comments were that he liked the arrangement of the nuts on bolts but thought the real impact came from adding the gradient although he did say he thought the colours of the gradient would be better reversed. Of course that is just one opinion and we all have different views.

I do like the mono version though

The mono version is very good, Nigel, well done!
