    Snipe up close

They dont often come this close but this one was feeding in the long grass in front of the hide at Barnes, mostly obscured but over a period he moved closer and closer until for a few seconds he reached a slightly more open patch. Distance is around 4 metres and shot at 200mm with my Sigma 150-600

Very nice Stan, lucky you. We got quite a few Woodcock in the woodland at the moment, but getting a shot is almost impossible, they wait until you near on step on them and they are gone.

I've only ever seen one and that was a long time ago. Well done for capturing this.

they are often mentioned on the sightings board at Barnes but that is usually someone with a scope at 500 metres distant. Like with a lot of wildlife photography we were lucky to be in the right place and right time when this one came close

Nice shot Stan. I managed to get one about 8m away a few days ago, first time I'd done any bird photography for a while. A lot of the time, they're probably a lot nearer than you think but blend in so well to the vegetation.

as with this one before it got near - several people were trying to point it out but I couldnt see it
