    Help & advice needed

I have a 700d & no matter what lens I fit to it when on af, it shudders when trying to focus, sometimes it will focus, other times it just shudders for a while & then just doesn’t focus at all. Does this mean the end, or is it just a repairable fault? All advice appreciated. Dave

    Re: Help & advice needed

Some basic checks would be to see if the lens seats itself properly, whether the contacts seem damaged, clean the contacts, check whether manually focussing the lens works, check the zoom function works. Is it just AF, or does something weird happen in manual focus?

Do you have access to another EOS camera, and do the lenses behave on that?

TBH, I have never heard of this fault before, so don't know what else to suggest - but at least the thread will now be at the top of the list so someone else might see it!

I have come across this before and agree with Mike regarding the contacts.

Often, a bit of vigorous rubbing with a soft cloth will do the trick, but if it doesn't, use one of the old fashioned green rubbers (erasers). If you recall, they were a bit harder than pencil rubbers and designed to remove ink.

As the problem persists with various lenses, logic dictates it is the body contacts that need the clean, but I don't suppose it would hurt to clean the lens contacts as well.

        Hope this helps.

The very best of luck with that, but if all else fails, I recall we used to manage quite well before auto focus was available.

But the 700D does not have a Fresnel screen or any other device to aid manual focusing.

Give them a call and if its out of warranty get a quote for repair you may have to send the lens and body

How old is it? if you paid by card you may find it has an extended warranty through that.

If I've read this correctly, then assuming it's the body that needs repairing then you'll be in for somewhere between £104 and £130

Thanks all, contacted Calmut/ Wex in Edinburgh, they send all their cameras to a division of their company called Fixation Photography. They give a label to post to them for £5, send by Parcelforce they find the fault tell you how much to repair, if you don’t want it done they will send it back free of charge. Anyone dealt with them before?
