    Green Woodpecker & Puffin

    Two wood carvings I've completed. Both carved in Lime, wood pecker feathered, puffin un-feathered

        Difficult to say, I suppose about a 100 hours depending whether I'm burning feathers on them. A carving might take me a few months, playing around with it there and then and then popping off off with the camera for a day or two! Burning feathers can take a few days especially with larger birds when you are burning barbs in. Such as with this Avocet from my Flickr wood carving album

          No Avocet photo showing . Most impressive skill , have always wanted a go at this . Did you have any training for this ? What is feather burning ?

            Seem to have a spanner in the works - picture back. This is feather burning which is done before air brushing. This is the standing bird in this picture

            I did go to night classes many years ago but I'm self taught on the wildlife carvings.--- 70 odd yeas of studying wildlife!!!!!!!

                            Forgive my ignorance , but I still don`t see what feather burning is , I assume Lime wood is ideal for carving , and that you purchase this ?

                              Hi Mark, seems I put up the wrong picture, sorry if I confused you Below is the picture of the standing bird in the picture above after it had the feathers burnt on it. Each bird is carved from a block of Lime which I get from a saw mill. The burning is done with a pyrography machine which takes many hours. The bird is then given a coat of gesso (undercoat) before being air bushed with Acrylic paint
