    200D with 100-400L combo trial

    I thought I'd give this a try...providing 640mm equivalent framing.
I immediately found the AF didn't work at all....so used manual focus ....not bad for ISO1600 and 3200 and hand held. There had been buzzard about but unfortunately it had its own plans this afternoon which wasn't to wait for me to get anywhere near ...
(just checked the lens and it was switched to manual...doh!)

Nice. The full zoom blurs the background nicely. Lovely looking pooch, too

excellent work - clearly a very well trained friend to stand still for so long whilst you focused in

The models with the 24 mp APS-C give excellent results, in my case the 80d and 200d. I wonder if they can be improved upon much. One thing I really like for jpegs is the Fine Detail picture style, where you can adjust the amount, fineness and threshold for sharpening as with the Unsharp Mask in software, gives much better out of camera jpegs than those where you have just a single adjustment for sharpness.

I've used the 200d with the Sigma 100 - 400 C lens, a similar combination to that used here, it makes a very lightweight (for a tele zoom) combination and gives great results. I still wonder though why Canon doesn't make a body with more of the 80d features in the size of the 200d, I'm sure it's perfectly possible.

              Thanks All,
I'm always impressed with the quality from this lens....I'm sure the MKII is even better but I'm happy with this for now.

I think the marketing people are struggling to determine which combinations of features they provide in each body size...the 200D punches well above its weight....I doubt the image would have been better if I'd used the 5D3....luckily I didn't need sophisticated focussing today else it would have been a different story.

Super shots Brian and with manual focus , particularly like the first, although the second is not shabby either

My first L lens was the 100-400 but I never found it particularly good and only kept it for less than a year before replacing it with the 300 f4 and converter

Optical Limits (formerly Photozone.de) had the following to say after they tested two examples :
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM L IS is a very good performer with few weaknesses ... that's assuming you get a good sample - the first tested sample was mediocre whereas the second one performed very fine.

So perhaps you got a "mediocre" one. High copy to copy variation is still a surprisingly common problem with lenses, even those designated as "L", although not as bad as it used to be.

Yep, have the mk1 and 2, keep meaning to list the 1 but never get round to it, cannot say I see much difference between both examples I own.
