    Extenter question

First off does anyone have any of Canon's Extenders? If so what do you think of them?

Do they reduce the quality of the photo?

I was/am looking at the Mark III 1.4x extender but I have also been thinking about the 2x extender. For me it would definitely be a waste of money to get both so if I get one I need to get it right.

According to EOS Magazine there is no auto-focus between the camera and the lens for the 2x extender, but clearly it has the benefit of doubling your range, while to 1.4x retains the auto-focus but the range is less.

So what do you think of your extender?

FYI I would be using it with my 7DII and EF100-400 MkI

    Thx

    Re: Extenter question

I've got both and find them excellent when used on either the 70-200 or 100-400. In fact sometime ago I did a test using the 70-200 with a 2x and the 100-400 at 400 mm and there was no difference in quality.

With the 100 -400 Mk1 and 2x extender, you would surely have to be trying to manual focus at the equivalent of F11 (F5.6 minus 2 stops loss) so I would have thought that would be tricky with a pretty dim field of view.
Technical tests with extenders always show quite a big fall off in resolution, particularly towards the frame edge, but whether you would notice that in practice is another question.

        Re: Extenter question

I've never used the actual lens/tc combo that you're considering but I have used the following:

100-400 mk1 + Kenko 1.4x - IQ poorer, little or no AF although to be fair it's not expected but would work (slowly) in good light.
100-400 mk2 + Canon 1.4x III - excellent, little or no degradation in IQ or AF.

I think that the Canon 1.4x on the mk1 would be reasonably usable given good conditions but I honestly think that the 2x on that lens/body combo will be frustrating at best, mainly for the reasons given by Richard, above.

edit: a quick google returned this, which might be useful http://greenham-birding.blogspot.co....n-100-400.html

          Re: Extenter question

I use a 1.4x extender plus 100-400 Mk2 on a 7D2, and have no problems with the images - I would get the 1.4x as the 2x does not give autofocus with this set up.

              Re: Extenter question

I use both on my 1D iv along with a 100-400 mk 1 and I even get a slow auto focus in live view at 800mm, ok for things not moving too quickly, but 1.4 lives on the lens now.
