    1X4 EXTENSION

    Hi all,
I am considering getting a 1x4 extender to go between my 750d body and my 100/400 EF L USM IS lens,
anyone got any advice as to which one will be best for this set up? there seems to be a mark 2 and mark 3? also if I considered buying a used one, where would you recommend ?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: 1X4 EXTENSION

I had a 750D and Mk1 100-400 and used with a Kenko HD 1.4x it was only really useful in good light, although I could usually get AF to work.

After upgrading to an 80D and the Mk2 lens I also swapped the Kenko for a Mk3 Canon 1.4x. Obviously I can no longer compare like with like but the mk3 is excellent - but a lot more expensive than the Kenko!

For used Canon 1.4, I'd recommend Wex or MPB as I've used both with no issues.

I'm sure someone else be along shortly who has used both mk2 & mk3 Canons with some better info.

EDIT: I've still got the Kenko but I doubt it will see much use now, if any at all. If you weigh up the options and decide that you want a cheap-ish first step, drop me a PM and we could come to some arrangement!

      Thanks for the reply,
Did the AF work well with the canon unit ?

I'm not sure you'll get any AF at all but I never actually used the mk1 lens with the mk3 extender as I'd sold the mk1 lens before I got the new extender.

I'm not sure how useful you'll find this which a quick Google threw up:

Ah sorry, I assumed as it wasn't specific that it was the mk1.

Officially the 750D won't autofocus at all with either of the Canon extenders but you might get a single point AF working with the Kenko, assuming good light. It's one of the main reasons I upgraded to the 80D, to be honest!

                Re: 1X4 EXTENSION

I have the canon 1.4x and 2x mark 3 version, I use it between the 100-400 mark 1 and 2 lenses on both my canon 50D and canon 1DX, I find it good, it gives good results with little loss of speed, the 2x however slows down Focusing quite a bit. The MK three is supposed to be better than the two but cannot be stacked however, not that it will matter to you, I use the 1.4 more or less permanently on my ef500 lens. But as mentioned it probably won't autofocus.

Take your camera and lens in to a photo shop and try it, you don't have to buy it from them.
                Canon 1DX, 50D, EF500 F4.0 L, EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L I , EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF70-200 f/2.8L II, EF180 f3.5L Macro, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF17-40 f/4L, EF2.0X III, EF1.4X III, 430EX II, MR-14EX...

Some of Canon's DSLR cameras allow autofocus with lenses with a max f/8 aperture. Here's how to tell which ones.

Prime lenses are fine with extenders, they do work with the likes of the 100-400, but you can see the drop in quality, I use the mk1 100-400 with both the 1.4 and 2 times on my 1Div, they work but struggle in poor light.
