Has my 5D Mk iii just bricked itself?

Any 5D Mk III drivers out there had this problem?

    1) pick up camera switch it on and the rear screen stays blank, but top screen comes on as do focusing reticules in view finder nothing-else. Camera is unresponsive to all button and switch commands.

    2) install fresh battery no change

    3) install fresh back up battery and fresh main battery, no change.

    4) remove all batteries for 20 minute, then re-install all batteries, camera still remains unresponsive. Also notice that top screen does not switch off when camera is switched off.

Am currently trying an extended power down (4 hours plus) to see if that helps.

Not sounding good - probably better off giving Canon a call and see what they say?

I hope it isn't too expensive Jonathan. Let's know how you get on.

Might it be possible to re-install the firmware?

I realise the camera does not respond to buttons etc, but I wonder if you could connect thecamera to your 'puter and use EOS Utility to do the job, as described here:-

Thanks John, that was a thought I had last night, so I did connect the camera directly to the computer with the USB, but the computer couldn't see it

Seems that the architecture of the 5d Mk iii is similar enough to the 7D Mk i that this solution fixed the problem. Happy dance

That is good to hear - I assume it was the card door microswitch? If so, I guess you could very slightly build up the height of the part of the door which interfaces with the switch to ensure there is sufficient movement to activate the switch contacts (a tiny blob of araldite or similar perhaps).

@John, that's an idea which would require some very careful implementation.

@Peter, you got that in one
