    Fly Tying

I am having problems gaining access to my Flickr account since I have had my new computer, so I have set up a new account and these are test uploads to see if things are working ok.

Until quite recently, I was a Fly Tying Instructor and Demonstrator for the Fly Dressers Guild and as I get the hint that some of you tie your own flies, or at the very least use flies for game fishing, I thought I would delve into my archives for a suitable test of my new Flickr account.

These are some fully dressed Salmon flies, designed over a century ago to show a Fly Dressers skill level:

Great set of shots & love the flies as well, way beyond my ability on both counts. Off to New York next week for two weeks & come back to a new fishing season. Cannot wait.

There's a man that knows his flies.

That is very traditionally tied, based on an eyeless hook and twisted gut is used to form the eye. Difficult to get right and neat, but it was how things were done by the Gillies in the 1800's. In the winter months they would tie these fully dressed, highly decorative flies and then wait for the season when the Gentry would come to Scotland for the Salmon fishing.

They had a saying that there were two types of flies:

                Flies to catch fish.

                Flies to catch fishermen.

They could supplement their income quite nicely by selling their fully dressed flies.

Because they are salmon flies, they tend to be quite large. These are about twice life size, so you can see every mistake.

Trout flies are a lot smaller, as they are designed to imitate the Trouts natural food sources and there are some flies, rather than imitate, are tied to be realistic copies of the real thing. If I can find some images in my archives, i'll add them to this thread.

The Mayfly and Daddy are around an inch long, the Bee and Beetle around 1/4 inch.

Another super set of flies, never fished with a Mayfly, but love daddies, though mine don’t look as handsome as that.

In fairness, most of these were tied for publication, or during demonstrations. Any mistakes, or deviation of form, or a general lack of neatness would soon be criticised by fellow tiers. Strangely, the fish don't seem to mind if you chuck a scabby bit of fluff at them. In fact my best catching fly was so beaten up and ripped apart by catching so many Trout, but it still kept catching them. Had to retire it when it was just a hook!

As stated earlier: there are flies to catch fish and there are flies to catch fishermen and these are my "show-off" flies.
