Re: Canon 100-400L mk i) problem

You would not be disappointed with the Sigma 100 - 400C, it's an excellent lens in my experience. Independent tests (the only information I trust) also show it to be much better than the 100 - 400L Mk 1 and as good as, or better than, the 100 - 400L MkII, except at the edge of the frame on full frame bodies where it is very slightly worse, though not as much as you would notice in real life situations. Wex price is £699, while the L MkII is £1,949. No contest in my opinion. There are still people who insist that "L" lenses must be the best, just because they are "L" lenses, but it's not always the case.
Used prices can be crazy, one can often buy a brand new body or lens on the grey market for less than a used one. In any case, newer models of lenses tend to be much better than the older ones and are rarely available used.

Is the focus limiter set appropriately for the subject distance? Does changing the limiter make any difference?
Yep tried that plus changed focal areas, tried on second camera. It's kaput.

I'll be in London for 3 days so Fixation are the boys to use, I can get to them at the Oval

OK some decisions have been made.

Phoned Fixation and they will give me an estimate within the time span I'm there and then if I leave it for repair It'll cost me £30-50 to ship back to Spain.

LCE would have bought this lens if it was in good condition for £400. Don't think there's too much market for it in current state!

Hubby suggests we use this figure as our yardstick and if total repair and transport costs more than this then go for a new Sigma (669 at LCE) with new technology, lighter, 3yr guarantee etc.

It's not my L baby but my L baby has let me down and is not in fact a baby any more!

I use them as they are only about 30 miles from me, when i needed my 1DX cleaning, I took it in, they did it as I wandered around having a haircut etc and then I collected it before coming home, excellent service.

            Tony-

Lehmann's is in Stoke and I won't be. Not even to see my beloved football team in its dying throes as a Premiership side!

Yes indeed and I've learned about the Sigma alternative as well as learning that the the Fixation Guys are pukka.

Ha Ha . Now I've got my FF I have MORE on my "wants and needs " list than before !!

This upset with Trombone Boy has come at completely the wrong time as I was edging towards some other goodies to sneak into my suitcase on this trip.

another alternative is the sigma 150-600 C also very lightweight ,had a go of one today and surprisingly good and only a tad more than the 1-400

Love my 150-600c not to heavy at all, carried it 8 miles around New York in my camera bag today & only took 4 shots with it, not bad for a 70 year old, let alone a youngster like Bo.

Would also give thumbs up for the 150-600C. Great lens and weight isn't bad. Used a lot on trip to Yellowstone, produced some great images.

I would also recommend either of the sigma 150-600 lenses. In my opinion they are both worth the money.

Ok thanks guys. Seems like the Sigma has lots of fans.

I’ll have a serious look at both 400 and 600 versions IF the Canon is past it.

Having both the 100 -400 and the 150 - 600C, there really is quite a big difference in weight in practice. The 150 -600 weighs in at 1930 grams (about 4 1/4 pounds) the 100 - 400 at 1160 grams (about 2.5 pounds) i.e. just 60% of the 150 - 600. They feel very different in the field and since I bought the 100 - 400 the other has barely been out of the house. For comparison, the Canon 100 - 400L Mk I weighs in at 1380 grams.

Unless you have a specific interest in birds etc., I reckon the 100 - 400 is a better general purpose lens.

Interesting, Richard. I used the canon 100-400 on my crop camera for BIF and am tempted by the xtra reach of the 600, both for my FF and the crop.

But the weight of the 150-600 is considerable both C & S versions and so I really need to ask myself what would be the best use of my cash - IF - if the lens I already have is not repairable.

You make a valid point and maybe the sigma 100-400 would get more day to day usage
