    Great Raft Spider

    003 by SuperGeeman, on Flickr

Apparently found in only a few places in the UK, and not in Surrey.
So I have emailed a couple of places to see if they agree with the I.D

If it is, fantastic, but even if not its a cracking shot.

Should be easy for an expert to I.d. From such a cracking shot. Let us know the outcome.

I don't think it is, they don't have translucent legs, and I've recently photographed one of those, https://flic.kr/p/HeyEae

              Re: Great Raft Spider

I was wrong apologies, didn't look carefully enough, very embarrassed.
But I'd say it's most likely the Raft Spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus) which is more widespread than the Great Raft Spider (Dolomedes plantarius)

There are plenty of images of both online.

                  Re: Great Raft Spider

I've been recording spiders for over 25 years (usually dead ones pickled in alcohol, necessary for most species) and have never found either of the raft spiders, so quite envious.................. The translucent legs are because it's still immature and growing, the exoskeleton has to stay soft so that it can stretch as the spider grows, very young spiders are pretty much "see through".

Yep, kept tarantula's for over 25 years, the spiderlings are usually pink in colour, until a couple of molts, and the colour kicks in, fascinating creatures.
