    Kestrel 2018 - At Last

Mr and Mrs Kestrel are proud to announce the arrival of 2 young.

Visited on Thursday and still only eggs to be seen. Yesterday, Friday, was awful. Very dull, cold and pouring down. Typically it was day of local Whit Walks and brass band competition (get bands from all over the world taking part). So didn't visit nest.

This morning overcast with brief sunny spells and very windy so didn't expect to see much. Just as arrived heard lots of calling and the male left the nest.

Saw female with a vole that he'd brought her

She spent a bit of time eating bits then had her back to me and it looked like she was carrying on eating it. Then she moved to one side and I could see she was feeding two recently hatched chicks (you'll need to look closely). Looks like there is still at least one more egg in the nest, just in front of female, so could be more.

Survival will now depend on weather and how successful a hunter the young male is.

Thanks for comments. Always good to watch these birds each year.

The nest site is only 3 minutes walk from where I live and yards away from a towpath on a canal. On warm summer days loads of people walk past and never notice it.
