Re: Which lens for a Windsor Walk about?

I am interested in some thoughts on this. During lens reviews for a magazine I found that the wider the range of the lens, in general, the lower the quality of the resultant images. Out of all the tests I did, none of the consumer level lenses I tested ever performed to a standard that I would consider acceptable across the entire range. This range would improve with cost increases, but even as the cost went up, I still found them to be lacking in some area of the range. Anyone find a lens they feel is a standout in this area?

The 24-70 f2.8L II is just stunning, almost as good as primes, but at a price. Also worthy of mention is the 16-35 f4L is, another great performer. If you have a crop camera, then the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 is should also be mentioned, again, not cheap, but near L quality.
