Any way of recovering dark (very) photo?

Hi..while in the mountains trying to photograph Dotterel managed a couple of distant shots in good light just before the rain started. As we walked back the weather worsened into a mighty thunderstorm with torrential rain and hail.
We then came across a very tame Dotterel so i took a couple of very quick shots as i had no waterproof cover while the camera was out of my bag,I was very happy as they are really close shots...but being in such a hurry I didnt alter the exposure and as such got very dark, almost black images.

I am gutted and feel like a fool but is there any software that could get a usable(just for me)photo, ive tried lightroom but they look awful.

Sorry guy's, very rude of me - I sent John my home address so I could take a look at the file for him, it was a rough recovery so that he had a copy for his files.
