    Bempton, what to take

Is a tripod the way to go or will a monopod be better?

Definitely a tripod - unless you're lucky and can get quite close to your subject.

From my experience, it's maximum zoom, so the stability a tripod gives over a monopod is essential. Of course the tripod is not a lot of use for birds in flight!

I never use either tripod or monopod for any wildlife photography, just too restrictive, mind you I dont have a Canon 500 f4 but do use the Sigma 150-600 sport which is quite heavy.

I have seen people at Bempton using both but bear in mind all the viewing platforms can get quite busy so could be difficult to use anyway

Agree with Stan, regarding Bempton, when I last went it was too over crowded for my liking, same goes for the Farne Islands at this time of year. I used to like the Shetlands but that's got the same.
Like Stan I never use a tripod or monopod - something else to carry!

Thanks, yep taking the 500 with 1.4x and 2x convertors, most in fact all my bird shots with the 500 have been off the monopod to date, hence the query. I do have a tripod gimbal set up but was wondering if its worth taking instead, one part of the worry is the damned lens in wind is like a sail. I was also considering taking the 70-200 2.8 as well which will give me a lighter set up with a convertor for in flight, or would the 100-400 be better?

I am asking because photos of the cliffs on line do not tell the whole story and I haven't been before.

            Re: Bempton, what to take

I would just take the mono pod if only to take the weight of your lens.
Unfortunately it does become very busy this time of year so you have to fight for a bit of space, maybe best to go a bit earlier or later in the day (early for the puffins as the morning sun lights up the cliff face)later for the Gannets less chance for blown out whites!)

the railings on the lookout posts are very sturdy so balance on them Tony ,the lookout floors are made of wood so even using a tripod or monopod will induce bounce ,best bet is ensure you have a faster than normal shutter speed to ensure sharpness . however a 400 mm is a good length there as its all close action. if you go down the right hand path as you come out of reception go to bottom ,turn left and go to the first lookout ,on the left hand side theres a puffin nest hole less than 20 feet away .

Even on the cliffs? I was going to take the converters for those shots to give some reach, you think 400 is long enough?, I do have a beanbag in the car boot so may come in handy on rails.. Heck even ordered a few bits to clean my sensor lol.

I been going to Bempton for a few years now , your 500 maybe even with the converters will be handy for the smaller birds like the Puffins , unless your happy cropping quite heavily , your 1-400 will be ideal for the in flight Gannets . I would lug the 500 and tripod with me , it`s handy for the stuff on the cliffs , you could use your 500 for it all , but as mentioned the 1-400 will do nicely for the Gannets , but you can always take it off the tripod for hand held stuff if the need arises . Your gonna love it Tony .

then turn right and go along to the last viewing platform which is by far the best for close gannets provided the wind and thermals are such that the fly at eye height - got 90% of my shots over the two days from there

make sure its the last outlook though its called briel nook I think ,and agree with Stan its best for gannets . you won't get much along the actual cliffs as the grasses are to high ,as of a fortnight ago probably higher now
