    Bracket Fungi ID ?????

Anyone ID this. Obviously a bracket fungus growing on one of my large Sweet Chestnut trees this morning, very spongy to the touch.

That was my first thoughts Stan, but I've never seen Beefsteak start out like this before, plus I've never seen it on Sweet Chestnut always on Oak of which I have some with it on them.
I will let it mature and see what comes along
If it is Beefsteak I wonder if it will darken the wood, like it does on Oak.

The picture in Collins fungi book looks exactly like your shot, although as you say they do tend more to be found on Oak. In the bracket section there was nothing else that looked even vaguely similar

My books give oak and sweet chestnut as hosts. Best advice is probably to watch it grow and identification will be easier when mature.

Quite agree Stan, forgot I had Collins, but yes there it is.
So, think we are heading down the Beefsteak road
Will give it a week or so and then re-post
