    1.4 x Tele problems

Notice twice it has failed to lock to the lens, I add it to the body first then to the lens, twice as I moved the camera I noticed luckily it rotated and wasn't locked to the lens, anyone had similar and did you lubricate the pin? it can be locked by operating the slider button back and forth, but I do not want to miss it one time.

Never had that problem, but I always mount a teleconverter to the lens first and ensure it's locked.
Please don't ask about my kit, it's embarrassing!

Yes I realise that is the correct way of doing it or the camera can sense what's on it incorrectly, but I often do it in the field and like to get the camera sealed up first, as the 500 and tele is a bit wieldy to mount to the camera. its the pin in the converter that is the problem, so fitting it to the lens first would make no difference to the problem.

It does help in the sense that having locked it, I always give a quick twist as a double check.
I take the view that lens security is more of an issue than the potential of a bit of dust, but completely accept that a 500mm is more than a little unwieldy. ;)
If you do decide to lubricate the pin, go easy, and I would probably use graphite to do it.

I had the same problem with the pin on a 1D3 and took it in for repair. I now make sure that the pin is retracted during operation both on the camera and converter. The pin on your converter may well be damaged.

As far as which order you do it in I don't think it makes much difference. I usually put the converter on the camera first.

I always put the converter on the lens first, then the combo on the camera -- never had a problem with either Canon or Sigma converters

Thats how it says in the manual Trev, it's something to do with the camera sensing what is on it, if you put the convertor on the body it senses that but might not pick up the lens fully, if you put it on the lens and then on the camera it senses it as a complete unit.

Found this but it wont allow me to post the canon link as it thinks it is spam

Attach the extender to the lens, and then attach the OO lens to the camera. To remove it, reverse the order. Errors may occur if you attach the extender to the camera first.
