              Great image John - I assume that, buried deep in the cliff, where the tree has its purchase is the "Room of Roots" (see Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake)

                Must be buried very deep as the pressure on that tree when the gales blow into the bay will be extreme. Funny you should mention Titus Groan as I have the Gormenghast trilogy on my Kindle and I'm just waiting for the time to do it justice. Have to confess, though, that I hadn't realised it was written by an astronaught
