Difference between the versions of the Canon 1.4 Teleconverter

I'm considering getting a 1.4 converter for my Canon 400mm f5.6 which will go on a 7D Mk II. Can anyone please advise the differences between the Mark 1, 2 & 3 versions that I may need to be aware of.

I may be replacing the 400 with a 100-400 mark II next year. Any comments on whether this zoom works well with the converter would also be appreciated

    TIA

Optical quality improves with each generation. The Mk III has fluorine anti-smear coatings, improved normal coatings, fancy glasses to reduce CAs and has less barrel distortion. The Mk II is a significant improvement on the Mk I. The Mk III also has a microprocessor to improve AF speed and accuracy with Series II Superteles, which isn't really relevant to you.
I use the MK II with the 100-400 Mk II on a 7D Mk II, and it works perfectly well. I have no experience of the 400mm f5.6, but I can't see why it wouldn't be fine.
Please don't ask about my kit, it's embarrassing!

I can confirm that the combination of 100-400L ii and 1.4x iii works extremely well. My recent shots of dragonflies were taken with this combo on my 80D.

Thanks for your input, it's always good to get real world opinions. I was looking at getting a pre owned mark II converter as they seem to offer reasonable value

Not that you will as it degrades the image, but the MK111 cannot be stacked as it protrudes out, but the MK11 can, but it isn't recommended.

I have the 100-400 both versions and my 1.4 mk111 works well with it.

Remember they are not compatible with every lens though
