    Grasshopper ID

    This isn't the best shot ever but I'd be interested to know the ID of these and whether they are two separate species or male & female of the same. It seemed to me that they were either about to fight or mate!

    Chris, not an expert by any means but I think this is the Common Field Grasshopper. I would say that the one in the foreground is the male, the other a female. There is a vast range of colours in this species so a bit difficult. Grasshoppers like birds can be identified by their song-(chirping) if you have good hearing.

      It was the chirping that alerted me to them but I'm a bit lacking experience of grasshopper chirping!

        Chris, its the number of chirps they make in a certain time - like ten chirps over a period of fifteen seconds etc.
