    The Power of the Ocean

Last weekend (13th-14th Oct) Madeira was expected to be on the receiving end of a tropical storm (Hurricane Leslie which had been downgraded to a tropical storm as it progressed along its route.)

On Friday in anticipation of the arrival of the storm the authorities announced the weekend closure of the airport, tour operators cancelled all road and sea trips, some ocean side houses boarded up windows and doors. Overnight Friday and on Saturday morning there was some rain and the wind was gusting quite strongly.

However the anticipated storm seemed to bypass Madeira, instead making landfall on mainland Portugal causing damage in and around Lisbon before moving further North.

As the day progressed on Madeira the rain ceased and the day brightened up with sunshine and clouds. But whilst the major part of the storm bypassed Madeira the Ocean was very angry, causing some really forceful waves to hit the Southern shoreline. To me it was a photographic opportunity not to be missed.

#1 Oh look at the waves.

#2 Maybe it's time to move

#3 A cold wet shower of realisation!

#4 Exit stage right, or possibly (for those who remember the Bangles tune) Walk like an Egyptian.

PS. The people (and my camera) survived the trauma, in fact, in the main they seemed to be enjoying getting soaked.
