    Fungi ???

    Not got a clue what they are but they are all over my pile of mainly Beech leaves

    Its quite frustrating when you cant ID by sight and even more so when you look through the books and still dont have a clue

    Just looking through Collins, they could be some sort of funnel

      I went down that road Stan then decided against it - I was inclined to make a wild guess at Fleecy Milk-cap, but was not sure.
      The problem with fungi is they change colour and shape as they mature in most cases -- the picture in the field guide is completely different from whats growing on the pile of leaves.

        The reality is that most fungi simply can't be identified from a photo, sometimes can be from multiple photos of all parts, including the underside. The national fungus recording scheme doesn't generally accept records, even with photos, that aren't confirmed by known experts. We have the same issue with most groups of insects, "field guides" simply aren't good enough where microscopic inspection is required and can actually be worse than useless when they fail to mention that there are numerous superficially identical species.
