    Default Image size question

Can any forum member advise me how best to get an image with 1024px length and close to a maximum 5GB size ?

I usually start with a RAW file then after tweaking around end up with a jpeg that's maybe 15-20mB in size

I would then go to Photoshop, Image, Image size but then if I dial in 1024 px it usually ends up tiny- under 1Mb

    Would appreciate further instruction

    Many thanks, Bo

Bo, that's typically the size of the file for a JPG to that dimension. Most of my current Flickr images are sized to around 1600px and usually come out at around 1-1.3MB depending on content. Remember that the file is also compressed - the image size is actually bigger than that - for example I just checked an 1800x1350 pixel that has a filesize of 1.05MB but when opened the image is actually 2.5MB. In fact the full size (3000x2300) original while having an open size of 7MB only has a JPEG filesize of 1.8MB when closed...

I suspect that the 5MB figure relates to the size of the file when opened and not the size of the jpeg file itself. At 1024 on the long edge you are never going to reach any 5MB limit regardless of whether the file is open or closed...

As long as you save the JPEG at the highest quality setting you will get the best result, and largest filesize, possible for any given image size. It's not possible make a 1024 image fit a 5MB limit - open or closed - so forget about it.

Barbara - Irfanview has a plugin that allows you to set a maximum file size and the programme will then jpg the image to fit within that.

    Hi Bo
I think the file size is what they'er after, so i would just go with the 2024 px on the longest edge.
In photoshop open image then go to IMAGE menu at the top and scroll down to resize image then type in the px size you require then click OK finally Save AS rather than save for web.
Hope this helps in some way?

Thank you folks: seems like I was doing it correctly

I will now directly post an image sized 1024 pxs, resolution 300px/ inch and resampled with bicubic sharpener (reduction) and then afterwards post the link in from flickr for a comparison. I'll be interested to see the two side by side but any comments on the quality of the image are welcome

That's interesting. My 1024 image will not be directly shown but may be opened up and has got shrunk.

Trying again with an 800 width
