    Swanage Railway

A shot from a brief visit last September
I've purposely lightened all areas except the train. Does it work?

I can see that the additional contrast exaggerates the diagonal across the frame but to me I think it looks like its overexposed except for the train.

I like the composition with the train on the diagonal and you seem to have the full range of tones from black to white although i would agree that perhaps the lightened areas a a little too light.

Well done for getting the shot with the train coming the right way - so often with Swanage the good compositions are spoiled by the engine being coupled backwards

          Re: Swanage Railway

          Thanks Brian, Bill & Stan

It was a very dull & misty day & the colour shot didn't really work.
The first B&W also looked flat despite boosting the contrast.
The idea was to isolate the train & I think that succeeds. I do however agree that the lightened areas look too over exposed. I'll have a another go!

Stan - this was the first time I'd visited the railway and having looked at the timetable & our schedule I set off to Corfe Castle to get the train going back to Swanage. As you say it was running tender first! I returned later to catch the shot from the footbridge.

            Re: Swanage Railway

I think it works well, apart from maybe the platforms just need darkening slightly, especially the one to the left.

the footbridge is the favourite place to shoot from although another good place is the far end of the platform with the train approaching round the slight bend where you can then also get the castle in the shot. Just looked at one i took earlier in the year from there and the engine was the right way round

Ok - here's another go without the lightened areas.

Yes, this is more to my taste too but where is it? Swanage or Corfe?
