Canon PIXMA MG7700 Series - Printing Problem

I have used my MG7700 series very successfully for the last 3 years or so, but it has started 'banding' on prints very recently. Having looked at the on line manual I have followed the suggestions therein, i.e. cleaning, deep cleaning, check print head alignment, etc., but to no avail. On an A4 print the bands are about 7mm wide and horizontal on the print, and show up most on dark areas of the image.
Has anyone else had the same problem and managed to resolve it please?

Re: Canon PIXMA MG7700 Series - Printing Problem

I had this on a Canon i9950 and after following all of the maintenance steps, it transpired that I needed a new print head. As the cost of a print head wasn't far off the price of a new complete printer, I went for a new printer.

Shame really, I only had the i9950 for 16 years!

Re: Canon PIXMA MG7700 Series - Printing Problem

I recently had the same problem as Colin with an MG5450.
I've replaced it with a TS8150 which is I can recommend as a good all round printer up to A4.
Luckily I have access to an A3 printer for those occasions when I need something bigger.

Thanks Colin and Bob for your swift replies to my query.
Looks like a new printer then, which is pretty disgraceful, as unlike Colin I have not had my MG7700 very long, and it has only had light usage. Printer manufacturers generally seem to have converted what should be a robust precision machine into a 'throw away'!
Looking at the TS8250 as a possible replacement, not too expensive if I have to throw it away at the end of the warranty period!!

Re: Canon PIXMA MG7700 Series - Printing Problem

Printers which have had heavier usage may last longer than lightly used ones. General opinion is that inkjet printers should be used at least once a week. If left longer, ink is likely to dry inside the head eventually leading to the type of problems you describe. Printers usually come with a test option which prints a simple page that doesn't use too much ink and printing this once a week if the printer is otherwise unused during that period is good practice.

Thanks for that tip Richard. However, with running through all the maintenance procedures I would have thought that would eliminate any blockages.

That is correct, to an extent. The maintenance procedures will clear inks that have gummed up the head, but when ink solidifies in the printer head, you have generally had it. If the odd nozzle is blocked, the deep clean option may do the trick, but I have had to run that half a dozen times when I was out of action for a couple of months. I tried the same on another occasion and it just wouldn't clear the blockage, hence the need for a new printer.

Regular use, or regular test options should keep it running well for many years.

Thanks again for the advice. Just one question to help make sure that I keep the replacement printer healthy, what option do you use for "test"? I have been unable to find anything with that specific title.

I don't have a Canon printer, mine is HP. With this (Windows 10) there is an icon on the desktop. I double click that, from the window that opens select "Maintain your printer". One of the options that appears then is "Print quality diagnostics page" and that's what I do.
I've had lots of printers and the procedure has been similar, though not identical, in all cases.
