    Grey Heron portrait

    A very obliging model

    A feather perfect (juvenile?) heron with a complimentary diffuse background.

    You have obviously focused on the eye which is beautifully sharp, but having focussed, I might have been tempted to lower the camera a touch to include a little more of his breast and consequently loose a little of the negative space above the head and add a little more space to the right of the beak by loosing a little of the shoulder on the left.

    I always grab the shot as seen so that I have something in the bag and then try to analyse the image to improve the composition on the second shot. Sometimes the original is best, sometimes the thoughtful shot is better.

                            Herons in generally are pretty skittish. With this particular heron, which I have photographed many times over the last 2 years will and let me get to within 3 meters of it.
