    Finally Back...

Finally made it back after the passing of my photo computer. I have now finished mourning its passing and replaced it with a younger, more vibrant model...

I had thoughts of doing the same with Mrs C, but ever conscious of my own safety, bought a new computer instead.

Which model did you end up with?

A high end Dell gaming computer. The funny part is Colin, it is a lot like having a second childhood and finding a younger woman. First you have to find out if it is going to get along with those elements that came prior. If not, can you make changes to facilitate that? If you can't should you replace it or just deal with the fact that not all parties are going to get along? And is the end result REALLY going to be worth the expense?

Ok Colin, now a more in-depth look at my computer. It is a Dell 5680 using SSD components. It has an I7 chip and currently has 8 gbs of memory which will be upped to 32 in short order. It is capable of running three standard hard drives, of which I hope to run two IF the drive card supports Raid 0. That will be for data files and backup. It is 64 bit and is darn near 2/3 the size of my TV stand LOL! It is brutally fast and so far seems to run my 4K video smoothly. I actually had to clamp down on the Nvidia GeForce video card due to the resolution being too much for my old eyes to handle LOL!

Couple that with the SSD drive and you are quite right Brian!

I have a Scan 3xs range pc and it rocks, they provide pc's to the Queen etc, check out the site and look for some reviews

You can easily tailor them to your needs too, nice touch is it came with a memory stick on velcro inside that had all the software on so you could reinstall from it.

I used to use Dell but found they tended to go off piste in their designs meaning upgrading boards etc could be fraught with difficulties as they used in house items.

I looked at the Dell5680, in fact still looking and wondering between that and some others. Waited as I thought there might have been one in the fire place Christmas morning

                      Re: Finally Back...

Problem as said with Dell is you tend to be stuffed on upgrades as they use Dell components that nothing will fit, mine i couldnt even change the motherboard as the mountings were different, and a lot of the plug ins, lights, controllers, power, buttons etc would not fit to the board. fine PC, but life limited. Though they do price well.

I did exactly the same and got a machine from Scan with a bit of customisation, memory, graphics card. Only thing I've done is to change the SSD for a bigger one. My mistake at time of purchasing.

Use to work in IT and can confirm Dell use a lot of customised components which can make upgrading/repair problematic.

Just went for the 64bit Dell 5720 All-in-One, 27" screen, 1Tb SSD, 32 Gb mem, 8gb on the graphics card, 8Gb QNAP 4 bay NAS, 2 Seagate 8Tb external hard drives. Goes like stink after my 10 year old 32 bit Dell XPS 720 which required four teams of hampsters to keep it going. Screen is so dam big if I look at the bottom left corner I miss something top right.

I generally buy such a ridiculous computer that it runs for years as is. The laptop I replaced was seven years old and was only replaced when the hardware started to go bad and just was no longer worth putting money into. I upgrade by replacement, so proprietary isn't a big concern.
