    Noise settings on camera

What are the best settings on the 5D mk3 to have as little ‘noise’ as possible in my photographs?

    Long exp. Noise Reduction

    Disable
    Auto
    Enable

    High ISO speed NR

    Standard
    Low
    High
    Disable

    Thank you.

    1 Long exp:
Obviously only use when doing really long exposures, works well but takes 2 exposures say a 10sec for the shot then it takes an other 10sec shot for the noise removal so can take a while to process in camera.Good for static subjects but not so for moving ones such as fireworks etc.

    2 High Iso speed NR:
If you shoot Raw i would disable it and do your NR in software (i use Nik Collection for any NR i need to remove) if jpeg i would personally keep it low as it will make your images start to look soft or smooth and lacking in any detail.

Hope this helps I'm sure others will point you in a better direction than me

        Re: Noise settings on camera

Depending the camera model I set Long exposure to Auto or Enable. By default it only affects exposures of 1 second or longer so either setting means it comes on if I need it but doesn't affect 'normal' exposures.

High ISO noise I generally set to Low. Since I mostly shoot raw this normally has no real effect on the picture but on those occasions I use JPEG the low setting is enough to clear the worst of it without losing excessive detail. I can always do a little extra NR in post if required. I would never use the High setting ever...

          Re: Noise settings on camera

          Hi Colin

Personally, I don't use any in-camera NR, and have them set to DISABLE. That's on my 7D2 and 5D4.

I shoot RAW, and do all NR in post production, using various software tools.

Canon's DPP does very good noise reduction, and shouldn't be discounted.
For light noise removal, I am happy to use Lightroom, but for more serious NR I use Topaz Denoise 6 (part of the Topaz labs plug ins.).
Topaz Denoise is part of the Topaz Photography Collection (but quite expensive), but can be bought separately, I think (still expensive).

If budget is a concern, play with DPP first and see what you think... it is after all, FREE!

          Cheers
