    teleconverter 1.4 for a EF 75-300mm. 4.5-5.6 USM

I bought a 2nd hand sigma 1.4 teleconverter to go with the above canon zoom, but didn't know there is an incompatability between the two does anyone know please whether a Canon unit would work with the zoom and if not what the reason is. If the zoom can't be used I have to look for a lens that will accept a converte. Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Paul.

I stand to be corrected here but I think the 1.4 and indeed the 2.0 Canon teleconverter is only compatible with their L series lens.

Agree i'm afraid, not sure of any other brands that is compatible either. Best option may be to look for a second hand 100-400 canon zoom, or a 400 f5.6 prime if you need that length more often than not.

Thanks for the information Trev, it looks like I'm going to have to replace the 75-300 with another lens.

Thanks Lez, the 100-400 would appear to be the choice that looks the most practical.

I have used a Kenko 1.4 convertor with Canon L lenses in the past which were ok, I now use Canon ones, they do seem better.

Thanks for that information, I now have more of an idea of which direction I'm going to look at.

That's ok Paul,I've used them several times and they are very reliable.

Paul, I would advise against using a teleconverter with that lens. It is a kit lens with kit quality optics and odds are you are not going to be happy with the results even if it does work. BUT, you can try it and see what happens. I just wouldn't expect positive results. Test it on something innocuous.

I'm not a big fan of using converters with zoom lenses. Just too much glass and you may also lose autofocus or it becomes very slow. With the quality of sensors on modern cameras the other alternative is to crop the image.

Yeah Brian, but cropping with that lens will not produce a really good result. The optical quality is low. You can get away with that with an L series lens, but kit lenses aren't quite as forgiving...

So you probably won't be any better off using a converter.
