    Lens Recommendations please

I am looking for a general purpose EF lens I have my first full frame camera, i currently have the 100-400 L so want a smaller (and lighter!). There are several of the L series out there e.g. 16-35 mm, 17-40 mm, 24-70 mm, 24-105 mm. I have never had a prime lens so have no experience of these.

    Any advice please?

    Thank you
    Jackie

    Re: Lens Recommendations please

For a all round general walk-about lens a 24-70 f/2.8 is a lens w/IS I would recommend. Canon does not make a 24-70 f/2.8 IS for some reason. Even their new RF 24-70 f/2.8 is not IS. I have the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 with Image Stabilization. The reason I would recommend the 24-70 over the 24-105 is for the better blurred background you can achieve with the f/2.8 vs the f/4 of the 24-105. Which can be important when doing portraits.

I agree with Tom's recommendation of the 24-70.....then there is not much gap between the 70mm end and your existing 100-400.
If you then need to go wider the 17-40 is relatively inexpensive addition.

Personally I prefer primes...f1.8 or wider provides more control of background blur...the obvious starter might be a 50mm f1.8 or 35f2....or if L is in the budget I would recommend the 24 f1.4, 50 f1.2 and 85L (which I'd like) or the 100 L macro. All are excellent. The L lenses are very heavy comparatively

Hi Jackie, some good advice there. Do you have a budget in mind for your new lens? I too can recommend the 24-70 f2.8 L, a fantastic lens, but at a hefty price (£1.7k). The 24-105 f4 L is II (£1k) is still worth considering, giving reasonable wide shots and a moderate tele setting. The Sigma 24-70 f2.8 os Art lens is also worth a mention too (£1.2k)

Personally on the 24-105 L mentioned, I wouldn't bother with the mk2 version, it didn't in tests appear to offer much over the mk1
            Canon 1DX, 50D, EF500 F4.0 L, EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L I , EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF70-200 f/2.8L II, EF180 f3.5L Macro, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF17-40 f/4L, EF2.0X III, EF1.4X III, 430EX II, MR-14EX...

i love the 24-70 f/2.8 L, but that's really down to personal preference of what focal lengths you prefer to shoot with. the 16-35 L is also a great lens, just a smidge better than the 17-40mm, i've owned both. i would figure out what focal lengths you prefer to shoot and which lens would work best with your shooting style. i've never shot the 24-105 so i can't comment on that one.

for me it would be the 24-70mm, your preferences may vary. you can't go wrong with any of these lenses.

Thank you all. I need to look at some reviews and decide which focal length I prefer. I will let you know what I eventually go for. Will have a look and see what deals are around

I would have to concur Jackie. The nice thing about the 24-70 (as long as one can afford that one since it is pricey) is it covers the range I prefer for most things and is fast. The only reason after that to go to a 50 prime is if you need a faster lens and I will be honest with you, it is RARE indeed I shoot 2.8 with my primes, much less larger. I do a lot of portrait work and personally prefer primes for that. But that lens covers my prime portrait lens range for the most part. Anything else you can do with your feet...
