    Kingfisher Male - 11 Jan

Went to the river yesterday afternoon to meet with a friend who wanted to get some shots but she cried off as the weather wasnt looking too good - however the light for the hour turned out the best of the week but as for most of the week, it was the male performing mainly on his favourite metal post. Another almost full frame at 6 metres and lens at 550

Nice pose, though. If he decides to alight somewhere new on a more regular basis I'll pop down again!

both he and the female do occasionally stop off on a proper twig, just not when you were there or yesterday

I think you should put some anti-kingfisher paint on that post Stan, so they have to use something different.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that would be a Sparrowhawk.

It would not be rocket science to fake that post up as I mentioned before

That would work but then we’d have lots of sparrowhawk pictures on the same hideous post

if fact, during the week before last, on the Stour Valley facebook page I suggested that someone might find a way of attaching a natural perch to the post and a couple of people responded, one with a suitable perch and the other with some heavy duty cable ties. They arranged to fix it on the Friday a week back, a day I was in Southampton but it proved too difficult to get into the water so they fixed it to the wooden fence of the outfall. It was there for a couple of days but the kingfishers ignored it and then it looked like the fishermen had cut it down anyway as Tuesday I found it on the ground. With no way of refixing or moving it at the time, I left it but during the morning i watched as a dog took a fancy to it and carried it off down the path, never to be seen again

As has been mentioned before, it is not the most attractive of posts but there are a good few photographers there who have never been able to get a shot of a kingfisher, so a shot on that post at a distance of 3 or 4 metres is better than no shot at all

Nice clear shot, I don't think the perch is that big an issue, it;s a bit weather worn, it's not as if it's a brand new shiny alloy post
