    Laptop Recommendations Please

My stepson wants to get into photography and wants to buy a laptop. I don't know much about them as I use a PC. I would be grateful for any advice regarding memory, hard disc and graphics card. I see that gaming laptops have graphics card already installed. Is this the way to go or am I off the mark?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Re: Laptop Recommendations Please

I have a Dell XPS 15 which I'm very happy with. Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD. Not cheap (unless compared to a similar spec'd Mac), but I got a good deal from the Dell Outlet.

As with most computers, PC, Mac or otherwise, adding more memory is the cheapest way of improving performance so go for as much as you can.

Have you looked at the 2018 iPad Pro models? It may be a bit off the wall but I’ve used mine for over a year and don’t have a laptop. Lightroom works very well and Photoshop is on the way...

Brian, have a look at PC Specialist machines, they do custom laptops to suit all pockets. May be beneficial if you had a budget in mind. If cost is limited, and photoshop would be minimal, I would look for something with an i5 cpu, 8GB ram, gtx1050ti gfx card, 250GB SSD and 1TB HDD. If you want full blooded, an i7/i9 cpu, 16gb ram, gtx1070/1080 gfx, 250/512gb NvME M.2 SSD, 2tb HDD.

Lez's 'full blooded' spec is not far off what I use and is the way to go as photographic processing software is ridiculously resource hungry.

Additionally may I suggest a decent external monitor too? We have a laptop in the house but I couldn't imagine using such a tiny screen for PP. Oh and at least one external drive as you can't have too many backups.

          Cheers,
          John

Thanks for the feedback. It's given me plenty to think about and I now have a clearer idea of the way to go.
