    Nuthatch

I don't often do woodland birds, but saying that, I have some glaring omissions and one is the Nuthatch. My previous shots of Nuthatches have been mediocre, mostly because the li'll devils flit around so quickly that by the time I point a lens at them, they're gone.

One of my challenges for 2019 is to produce some reasonable shots of a nuthatch, Marsh Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Jay and Green Woodpecker.

    Here's the Nuthatch:

Well you've achieved perfection with that shot Colin, lovely detail. One point I may have just cloned out that bit of dead wood in the LH corner

I did consider that Trev and tried a quick removal, but it looked better with it there:

            • It was there.

            • It "Holds in" the left side of the image.

            • Compositionally, it echoes the perch the Nuthatch was on.

However, on further reflection, perhaps it needs some tweeking so that it doesn't attract the eye away from the main subject. I'll have a go at darkening it down a little ........... or maybe a lot!

              Lovely shot, Colin.

I have a similar list of "bogey" birds (it's a lot longer, to be honest!). Nuthatches are too few and far between and although jays are plentiful I just can't get close enough!

Yesterday I saw and photographed my first ever Nuthatch, but it comes nowhere near as good your superb shot Colin.

My first ever was a very poor image, but I kept it and that spurred me on to get better ones. I especially remember my first Kingfisher image; seen the other side of a lake I used a 500mm + 2x and a 1.4x stacked and in poor light. I got a tiny, slightly fuzzy blue thing in the middle of the frame, but it was my first Kingfisher. It can only get better.

Keep this up Colin & your list of great shots will be complete by summer. If they are all as good as this it will be some portfolio.

                            This one's for Trev.

He made a suggestion and it got me thinking. I think darkening the dead wood in the LH corner has improved the shot.
