My first printed image in over 20 years

IMG_0271-2 by Roy Widdowson, on Flickr

I sent this off to be printed(after changing the original dimensions and resolution in LR)(It's now 15"x10" and 300 dpi)and got it back today,I used DS Colour Labs.

My first print in over 20 years and I'm thrilled to have taken a shot that's good enough to print.I'll be getting it framed in due course to go on my wall.

It's all down to the advice and encouragement given on here since joining the forum that I've reached this milestone,so a big thank you to you all!

Well done Roy.....I think printing adds a whole new dimension....you'll be looking for your own printer I think?

Thanks Brian, yes a whole new dimension.

I won't be getting another printer though,I've got a basic printer/scanner/copier and it does what's needed. If in the future I want any more prints doing, I'll be happy to get them done professionally again.

I justified my PRO10 printer on the basis that if I paid for my RPS distinction submission prints for LRPS and then ARPS then it would pay for itself.....I don't know how I fiddled that calculation but it seemed to be good at the time.

Re: My first printed image in over 20 years

My print was £5.95 for a 15x10,the main cost was 1st class mailing, but they've done a good job on the print,so I'm happy with it all.

I haven't got the space in my flat for too many more framed prints, one wall already has my Japanese sword, plus 2 large copies of railway art paintings, plus a couple of other things,so I can't envisage my putting more than a couple of my own prints up in addition the one above.

The railway prints are of the Great Central as it looked in the 1960s and as I remember it.The locations are very close to where I live now,and I saw them being used by the railway at the time.

I justified my PRO10S on some equally spurious logic, but it got it by Mrs C's purse strings, so all's well that ends well. However, it certainly is a thirsty old beast for inks and to minimise this, I tend to save up my printing to do in one go. But, it also needs to be used regularly to keep it in peak condition, so it's a bit of a balancing act.

My standard Canon profiles weren't up to much and all printed dark, but custom profiles sorted that out.

                  Nice one Colin.

For what a couple more professional prints will cost me in the future, and 2 or three will be my limit due to lack of space,I just cannot afford/justify a pro-spec printing set-up.I'm very happy with the quality of the one that I've had done.

Re: My first printed image in over 20 years

When I refurbished/decorated the lounge for some badly needed browny points, Mrs C wanted some Black & White prints of various sizes. I could manage everything up to A3+ but she wanted a couple of even larger ones. I used Peak printing for these super size prints and they were superb, exactly as they looked on my monitor.

I thought then that apart from the convenience, I could save a lot of time, money and effort by getting my prints from them.

....you see 10 prints for LRPS and 15 more for ARPS = 25 x £6 = £150, factor in I could have failed first time makes £300 and we have loads around the house....ooooh! must have missed something.

Re: My first printed image in over 20 years

Having my prints done professionally is cost effective for me, given that I'll only have a small number of them printed.

In my film using years,I quite often used to push/pull the exposure when needed(ie a 200 ASA film pushed via camera settings to 400 ASA etc)and because my local labs didn't really quite grasp that concept, blank looks when I explained it,the resulting print quality was decidedly average.

On a couple of occasions I sent films off to be hand printed by a specialist firm, and the results were so much better.I guess the difference in today's terms would be using one of the DIY printing systems in shops if the quality isn't too important, and then having them done professionally if it is.

I see that DS Colour Labs still process films, the cost is higher, but obviously the demand is still there, they charge extra per stop if a film has been pushed/pulled.
