Last Autumn our monthly English language magazine "Roqueta" held a photographic competition to show Winter in Menorca
The prize was to grace the cover for this month’s - April - edition.
So… Portrait Mode then. No point showing Christmas lights in Mahon or bleak scenes. That’s not going to sell copies of the magazine in springtime , is it?
Inspiration eventually struck and I took myself off to Sa Bassa Verde or Green Pond. This is a 45 minute trek through fields then up, up and up through scrub, trees and rocks to the top of a hill near Algaiarens. In the winter months the rains form a natural pool up to 2 metres deep (yardstick in the front left of the picture) in a rocky bowl. This beautiful and fragile temporary ecosystem usually dries up completely by April/ May
It’s relatively unknown and due to the unfriendly access you can often be alone there, which is beautiful on a sunny day
Anyway it's quite a thrill being on the cover of a magazine! Got my name and mugshot inside too....
