    Straw Spiral

Final round of a print competition coming up in a couple of weeks and I always struggle with stupid themes, which for this round is plastic.

So I bought a pack of plastic straws and turned them into a bit of digital art

I very much like that Stan.

Focal point in the perfect place, love the spiral and I suspect a lot more work in this that than might be initially imagined. I am thinking if vibrant colours where necessary, fading out to pastels and do I detect some superimposition to fill the space?

Either way, if I were still judging, that would attract very high marks. First for the initial idea, implementation, impact, composition and wow factor. That should be a ten in any judges book for that competition .................... though you can never pre-judge a judge. Let us know how you get on.

the basis for this was a shot of a bunch of straws looking straight down on them and then in photoshop using my trusty "spiral action" to turn it into a spiral before cropping for composition

the competition was last night and the judge gave the shot 10, he also gave my second plastic shot 10 and.....oh he also gave my open, a kestrel 10,so I won the competition and the cup - it was over 3 rounds, max score 90, my total was 87.5 and Dee was second with 82

Congratulations to you both for your club competitions. Stan I seem to remember you describing your technique for creating theses spirals in another post. I’ll have to search for the post and give the technique a go.

I have it as a photoshop action with is used on the previous layer upwards of 30 times to get the desired effect and then cropped in to get rid of blank canvas. The basic idea is after selecting the subject and placing on a new layer, the layer is copied and reduced in size by 10% and rotated by a few degrees each time , keep doing this on the last layer until the image is so small you han hardly make it out
