Imac 2013 SSD upgarde - worth it?

    Hi all,

I have a 21.5 iMac late 2013 and it is starting to run very slow, beach ball every time i try to do something. Unfortunately to do any upgrade on this model you have to remove the screen and almost de-assemble to upgrade RAM.
However, upgrading the hard drive looks a little easier and something I could probably attempt. Can't really afford a new mac at the moment but could probably afford a new 1Tb SSD.

From those that have experience with this - would an SSD upgrade improve the performance of the machine and any tips on what would be needed in terms of prep for replacement - i take it backing up everything externally is a pre requisite.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro with 8Gb RAM. I was going to eBay it, but I decided to install a 250Gb SSD just to see how it went - it has made a major difference - I still can't run anything above El Capitan, but it's fine for running Affinity - it was even respectable for running Lightroom. If you can't afford a new machine, upgrading to a decent SSD (not a cheap one off eBay - I used Crucial) will make a world of difference.

      Jock.
Thanks for the reply. Sound as though it might be worth a punt.
How did you go about backing up and reinstalling data off the original hard drive.

Crucial SSDs usually come with Acronis True Image cloning software which makes it a doddle.

If you can fit more RAM in, however difficult it might seem, then I reckon that would be a better improvement per pound spent than an SSD. Do both and you'll be flying!

          SSD should make big difference.

Easy way to move from original to new drive is one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Doc...s%2C150&sr=8-3

Basically put existing drive in one bay, the new drive in the other bay. Press a button and wait till copy completes, put new drive in your computer and of you go.

New drive needs to be larger volume than original.

Have you checked that all your memory is still working. Sometimes one of the chips will fail.
