    Just bought ...

I am gradually building my gear up.
I have just bought a new Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS lens.
As I'm not able to get out often then at least I can photograph the plants, flowers and creepy crawlies in my back garden.
    I missed owning this lens.

Nicely done Stephen, a superb lens.

I still have the older non IS version and it is a cracker, such that I can't quite justify upgrading to the IS version. However, I don't think it will be too long before "want" overrides "need".

It is an excellent lens.......it has the best bokeh on the market I think.

                  Re: Just bought ...

Talking of the wonderful 100mm Macro I was surprised to find out that my EF 50mm/f1.4 combined with 12+20+36mm Kenko extension rings provide more macro power than the EF100mm does, even with these extensions on (I have not made any measurements yet). Of course the extensions cause a significant loss of light, but a sturdy tripod can take care of this.

That is an interesting point...of course the 100 f2.8L also works as a very good portrait lens and has IS

This is correct Brian. I am not comparing the overall quallity of EF 100/f2.8 IS with any prime lens - extension ring combination; just noting a macro-related observation.

I've had the new lens now for around 2 weeks and it's still in the box.
I will get it out one day.

With 68mm of extension added to the lens the effective focal length is 118mm, an increase of 2.36x which brings your maximum aperture down to approximately f8 so it will be a bit gloomy in the viewfinder...

The approximate magnification can be calculated by dividing the extension by the focal length = 68/50 = 1.36x.
