    Red Admiral - Vanessa atalanta

I don't have a macro lens, so taken with my 70-200 f4, slightly cropped.

On the portrait, there looks to be a angry packman!

    Thanks for looking

You obviously do not need a Macro lens , these are good . A lot of toggers are using different lenses for large insects these days , the new Canon 1-400 is proving to be good , and I believe Stan , a member here uses a 300 f4 , with good results .

I seem to remember that Stan uses his 300mm F4 with an extension tube.

              Thanks for the comments.

Colin - interesting idea using extension tubes, will get the film camera out to try.

              Thanks Chris

not extension tubes but either on its own or with the 1.4x. Shooting at the minimum focus distance of 1.5 metres you can get butterflies, dragonflies etc around the same size in the frame as using a macro lens but with less chance of spooking them
