Re: Jessops going into receivership again

I've only been in the new Leicester branch of Jessops twice, and it was like a portal back to the 1990s in that customer service-if it can be described as such-was still very poor.

On both occasions the two staff on duty,in a very tiny shop unit, were more concerned with fawning over millennials printing out their smartphone"happy snaps"than dealing with the sale of my fairly expensive(£100+)camera bag, plus a smaller item on the second visit.

In the 90s with a lot of staff on duty in a bigger store,on at least two occasions the same very poor"customer service" attitude lost them sales of zoom lenses plus other things. At least in those days though there were other camera shops near by.

So,if that is the general situation across most of their stores in 2019,I'm not surprised that, according to the news article, none have made a profit.

Peter Jones was quoted as saying that things in-store would be the same as prices on-line,yet I've seen lenses etc cheaper than Jessops prices in other on-line outlets.

I wandered into the branch in Cribbs Causeway near Bristol yesterday and wandered right out again - there seemed to be much less stock than I recall from the past - and yes, the staff were as indifferent to your presence as they always were!

To be fair I have met some fairly knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff ...they must get fed up with people coming in to see a product and get advice knowing that they’ve already lost the sale to an internet retailer. The stock is indeed limited but I can’t see how you can gear a series of small shops to satisfy enthusiasts when the high street shopper just needs a max spielman or boots. Wex has a good model...bigger and fewer specialist stores away from the high street with low rent with a strong internet presence.
Although once a while back in the Norwich shop the assistant tried to fit an EF-s lens onto a FF body....he did admit he was a Nikon guy.

Once upon a time Jessops were THE shop for serious photographers.

They stocked everything you could ever want and their staff were knowledgeable enthusiasts, only too keen to help you out. I have seen the various levels of cost cutting over the years, no doubt to compete with the internet traders. I suppose when you end up with youngsters on minimum wage and no stock, there is only one logical conclusion.

One wonders, when the inevitable was apparent, how large a bonus the main board directors awarded themselves?

Fully echo Colin's comment. I remember going to their Leicester store way back in the early 1960's and was impressed by their vast volume of stock - you name it they had it. I think way back then they never had the outlets in other cities and towns.
For the past 30 years I've used Mifsuds in Brixham, knowledgable staff and a massiv stock, but most of all it's a family run business.

Re: Jessops going into receivership again

It`s a great shame the high street shops are suffering , but when they are undercut by the internet prices by quite a gain generally it`s hard for people to justify spending the extra in them . I would love to buy all my gear in my local shop , it`s all very nice if it goes wrong and you can drive to the shop and have a rant , a big advantage , but if it saves you £1-2 or £300 quid by buying off the net , it`s a no brainer where your money is going to go . Unless your very well off of course . The only answer for the shops is to close that price difference gap .

Our only local camera shop used to stock cameras....I tried to buy Canon gear off them several times and each time I could get better prices elsewhere than the shop could buy direct from canon....they no longer stock any hardware....just print and take passport photos.
Other shops have told me that Canon only want to deal with big volume sellers.....so maybe that's the issue...no support for small shops from Canon…..Olympus give good local shop support apparently.

Re: Jessops going into receivership again

I well remember Jessops from the early 70s and frequently made the sixty mile round trip to their shop located near, I think, The Battery in Leicester. As the grew in popularity they moved to a new larger location on Hinkley Road and soon there was a branch on every major high street in the country. Their motto then was we wont be beaten on price. One of the many reasons for their downfall was that they stopped doing PX in, I think the 90s, leaving customers to dispose of their old gear privately before they could upgrade to the latest offerings from the likes of Canon or Nikon etc. The moral of all this is, if you can, find and use your local dealer. I am very fortunate in that I have a great one where I live named Skears Photographic. Only this year, after a trip to The Lakes, and being totally disappointed with my results, I paid Steve a visit and explained my situation. The upshot was he produced a SH mint boxed 5D3 coupled with a 24-70L and a 70-300L and told me to go away and play with them for a week and see what I thought. I knew within the first hour that I would buy this outfit, so impressed was I with the results it gave that a deal was struck within days, one I have never regretted. And that is how I became a Canon user. God I wish I had done it years earlier and saved myself a small fortune. Thank you Steve, and long may you prosper. Remember, use em or loose em. Regards, Ian W.

I found they never moved with the times and were expensive, I use every now and then London Camera Exchange, bought my 500L from them and as they didn't have a bag big enough to put the box in I jokingly said knowing my luck I will get mugged on the way to the car with it, the guy from the shop insisted on carrying it the mile or so to the carpark. Faultless service, I took in my camera, tried it out in the street went home checked the photos of my PC then decided yes called up reserved it and collected it the next week.

I've always had good service at LCE. Knowledgable staff and prices that are decent compared to online. Sometime their stock is a bit short but in terms of service, generally good.

                            I also use LCE.

They are unable to match best internet prices, but they go a long way towards it. I get plenty of sound advice, a warm welcome and a coffee, able to try before I buy and occasionally some freebies to sweeten the deal. The ability to touch and play with the gear, plus welcomed as an important customer/friend, plus owning the problem if something goes wrong and loan gear while it being repaired is beyond the few pounds I would save from some indifferent internet supplier and I am more than happy to pay a small premium for such excellent service.

I have also used/visited Mifsuds when I am in Devon and echo Trev's comments.

Can I echo Colin's comments about LCE - I use the Nottingham branch for major purchases and they are a great bunch of people, enthusiastic & experienced. Just what you want.

I once tried Jessops (Camera Jungle?) for a quote on a 75-300 EFS which was surplus when I went full frame. Their offer was lousy and I asked for my lens to be returned. 3 weeks later they returned a Nikon lens! After many calls and threats they eventually gave me a brand new lens, what else could I ask for? I even had to ask for postage to send the Nikon back.

I took the new lens unopened to LCE. After checking the paperwork they offered me the wholesale price with which I bought an immaculate used 17-40L from LCE. Win-win!

I haven't been near Jessops since.

Like any other business selling consumer products you have to do a little bit extra to win sales, even if it's only showing interest!
